CHEMISTRY -1

Time: 3 Hours

Answer. Question No. 1 which is compulsory and any five from the rest.

The figures in the right-hand margin indicate marks.

Answer the following questions: 2x10

(a) What is the bond order of H2?

(b) What is the standard enthalpy of H20 (l) for the reaction H2÷l/202 —> HO (l)

AH° =—68 Kcal at298 K?

(o) How is it possible for a reaction to be spontaneous yet Endothermic?

(cl) Explain why transition curve of rhombic sulphur has positive slope?

(e) Calculate uncertainty in velocity of bullet weight 10 gm whose position is known with ± 0.01 mm.

(f) What ¡s the relation between rate constant and temperature of reaction?

(g) A close packed structure of uniform sphere has cell edge 0.8 nm. Calculate

the radius of molecule ¡lit has (j) BCC lattice, (ii) FCC lattice.

(h) Write down the cell reaction of cell

(j) Fe/Fe2// H2S04/H2(Pt)

(ii) Pt, H2(l atm)/HCI (0.2 M)//C12(1 .6 atm)/Pt.

(j) Write down the One-dimensional time independent Schrodinger Wave equation and define each terms used in this equation.

(j) If a reaction has an equilibrium constant K<1 is E° positive or negative?

Calculate the enthalpy, entropy change for cell reaction. 4

(b) Prove that

(ii) If T = f (P, V), then prove that dT is a perfect differential. 2

3. (a) Reaction A follow the first-order kinetics and reaction B follow second order kinetics. If half-life periods both these reactions are equal, compare their rates (i) at the start of reaction and (ii) after the lapse of one half-life. 5

(b) What do you mean by term homogeneous catalysis? Explain giving example, the various theories of homogeneous catalysis. 5

4. (a) What do you mean by lattice energy? How can you find out lattice energy? By using Born-Haber cycle. Explain with example. 5

(b) Derive an expression for find out density of crystal .sliver has atomic radius

0.15 nm. Calculate the density of sliver it crystallizes as (I) simple cubic

(ii) BCC. (Atomic mass of sliver 108 gm) 5

5. (a) Calculate the number of atoms per unit cell of a metal having lattice parameter 2.9 Å and density 7.87 gm /cm3 and also predict the lattice system. At. Wt. of the metal is 55.85. 5

(b) (i) The heat of reaction for N2+ H2—* 2NH3at27°C ¡s—91 .94 KJ. What will be it value at 500 C if molar heat capacities at constant pressure and 27°C for N2 and H2 and NH3 are 28.45.28.32 and 37.07 J respectively. 3

6. (a) In the following gaseous phase first-order reaction A(g) -‘> 2B(g)+ C(g) initial pressure was found to be 400mm and it is changed to 1000 mm after

20 min. Calculate rate constant. 4

(b) What do you mean by one component system? Draw and discuss the phase diagram of one component system where one substance exist in two allotropic forms.

7. (a) Write down the electronic configuration of  MOs of °?‘ 0 0 and predict the magnetic properties, bond order and order of stability. 6

(b) The reversible reduction potential of pure water is —0.413 V under 1.00 atm pressure. If reduction is consider to be 2H + 2e — H9. Calculate pH of water. . 4

8. (a) Compare the difference between Freckle Defect and Scotty defect with examples. 3

(b) Give an example of a Hamiltonian Operator, Eigen function and Eigen value

for obeying the Eigen-value equation. 4

(c) Compare the difference between Eutectic reaction and peritectic reaction
